Wathen’s Kentucky Bourbon

I’ve recently been drinking Wild Turkey 101 and the reliable Weller 90. They are good earthy whiskeys, even though they are different flavors the two share similarities as far as sweetness and oakyness go.

This week while at my local BevMo I decided to pick up a bottle that A) I had never seen before and B) was less than $30.00. Alas we have Wathen’s Kentucky Bourbon a nice change from my recent regular pours.

I found it to be pleasantly fruity with hints of citrus after the initial alchohol whiffs (it is 94 proof) but even at 94 proof it was enjoyable served neat. It offered a chewy, buttery floral flavor with hints of some nutty vanilla sweets. A bit of water really brings out the best of this whiskey. The next morning my glass smelt of sweet cotton candy. It’s quite a treat.

This weekends liver crush

Friday night I went out to Poway to hang out at the cousins pad. We brought a bottle of Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage from 97. It packed a very earthy flavor, almost resembled… leather (?). After devouring the better part of the bottle we unleashed the fury of Guitar Hero, which for me was the first time. All I can say is that it kicked major ass. It was the most fun I’ve had in a while.

Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage + Guitar Hero = Good Times!!

Today I rushed a few liquor spots and picked up a few bottles. I picked up some more of the Elmer T. Lee single barrel mash (a favorite of mine). I had to restock as my bottle was barely there. Usually I’ve been trying new bottles every week to try and get an idea of what flavors I dig on most. This task has been made easier by all the knowledgeable folks at straightbourbon.com. So I picked up a bottle of Sazerac Rye which is pretty stank, it is a very straight forward whiskey and it has helped me identify the rye element I taste in other whiskeys. Overall I wouldn’t call it something I can swig on every night but it may grow on me.

Along with the Sazerac I picked up  some Willett bourbon. I did this pretty much because it came in a bottle shaped like a still. Flavor wise it reminds me Russel’s Reserve. It has an oaky flavor with hints of corn. I’ve been tasting corn often in certain bottles (not so much in all the Buffalo Trace products I like so much)

Here’s the Evan Williams weekend maker…

Riddle me this

So I have begun drinking the second bottle my mom bought me and it taste different from the first bottle BUT… they’re both from the same barrel. Barrel # 7-2472 you are harsh like gasoline chased with razor blades. I took a shot today and it left me unable to inhale for like two seconds once I gained the ability to breathe in and swallow I realized my eyes were watering. This bottle makes me howl very loud before I sip it and even louder after I sip it. I don’t know… the shit is like liquid sandpaper. Does it make my face numb after two shots? Yes Indeedy!

Today I made beef stew and I’m getting quite good at it. I don’t mean to toot my own horn but TOOOOOOOOT!!!! It is tasty and goes great with a lil’ Hank and single barrel Tennessee whiskey (even if it’s a rugged barrel).

Two reasons my mom’s cooler than yours

Tennessee whiskey from the navy exchange at retarded discounted prices! A semi fresh batch from July 2007. I am really looking forward to giving it the taste test.
Sweet, sweet single barrel

Hot Toddy Time!

I’m sick as a dog and you know there’s only one cure all for these type a’ things. I am crossing my fingers and doing strange dances in hopes that it is NOT another walking pneumonia. That was the worst shit EVER! I wouldn’t wish upon the worst, nobody really deserves a lung infection.
